While many will advocate that an intake and a catback should be your first mods on your MS3, they would be dead wrong if performance and ease of installation are any part of the criteria. The biggest problem with the MS3 in terms of performance is on the exhaust side. Take a look at the stock MS3 Downpipe. A small bellmouth leads to a sharp 90 degree bend, straight into a cataIytic converter. Kind of reminds me of ET the Extraterrestrial, actually. In any case, this design is great for slowing turbo spool up, reducing engine Volumetric Efficiency (VE), and improving emissions performance by creating a massive restriction right after the turbocharger before the catalytic converter. We gained 40 whp and 50 ft-lbs of torque with the installation of the MS3-SBE to our MS3. You are not going to get that with any intake/catback combination. And while installation is not the easiest, the power gains per $ spent makes this our recommended first step. The car still looks stock and still sounds stock but now beats stock STi's and EVO's easily from a roll.

Now that you’ve taken care of the biggest restriction in the system with the Stealthback Exhaust, it’s time to tackle the intake and finish off the exhaust system. You say you want to keep your car looking and sounding like stock or that you don’t want to drop your sub-frame or cut off your stock catback? OK, skip the catback. You’ll give up a bit of power, but not too much. Plus your car will be much quieter. Don’t, however, skip the intake.
Time for a bit of a lesson in turbocharging. When the turbocharger pressurizes the intake air it also heats the air. That is why you have an intercooler after the turbocharger. How much the turbocharger heats up the air depends on many factors and is described as the turbochargers compressor efficiency. Efficiency varies with boost pressure and airflow. This efficiency can be “mapped” on a graph of Pressure Ratio vs. Airlow (usually in CFM) and is called a Compressor Map. Generally speaking, as Airflow increases, compressor efficiency drops off. And as Pressure Ratio Increases, compressor efficiency drops off. You still with me? If you are you are probably asking yourself “WTF does this have to do with anything?” I’m getting to it. Pressure Ratio is the total absolute pressure produced by the turbo divided by the pressure before the turbo. If you have a restrictive intake, you actually create negative pressure (vacuum) in your intake. This negative pressure has the effect of INCREASING the Pressure Ratio. For example say you want to make 15 psi in your intake manifold. Atmospheric Pressure is 14.7 psi. Intake A causes a 2 psi of negative pressure in your intake. So the Pressure Ratio is (15 + 14.7)/(14.7 - 2) = 2.34. Intake B causes 0.5 psi of negative pressure in your intake. So the Pressure Ratio is (15 + 14.7)/(14.7 - 0.5) = 2.09. This means that in order to make 15 psi in your manifold with a restrictive intake, your turbocharger has to operate at a higher pressure ratio, and is therefore less efficient. This causes the intake charge to be hotter (less dense) than it would be at a lower Pressure Ratio. This causes your intercooler to have to do more work, and will cause it to heat soak earlier. All this only gets worse if you start to increase your boost pressure.
Lesson over. Get a less restrictive intake next and give your turbocharger and intercooler a break.

Your MS3 is now breathing easier and putting down somewhere in the neighborhood of 309 whp and 326 ft-lbs of torque. However, your car feels fast as hell sometimes, and not so fast others, especially if you have been driving it hard for awhile. The likely cause? Heat soak of your poor little Top Mount Intercooler. As discuss in the turbocharger lesson earlier, pressuring air also heats it up. It is the job of the intercooler to pull that heat out of the intake charge and increase the charge density into the engine. As the stock TMIC (or any IC) becomes hotter, it's ability to cool the intake charge decreases, and the intake charge temperature continues to rise. The small size of the stock TMIC (12.75" x 11.75" x 2"), small amount of thermal mass (8.5 lbs), and it's location in the engine bay on top of the engine all contribute to it heat soaking quickly when driving in boost. On paper, the solution is simple: replace the stock TMIC with a bigger IC Core with a larger amount of surface area exposed to ambient airflow, a larger volume core to reduce the pressure drop across the core, and a larger thermal mass to delay the onset of heat soak. Preferably, locate it outside the engine bay. It's a little harder in reality to make that happen within the confines of the car design. However, our Front Mount Intercooler does all those things. With a huge bar and plate core measuring 31.5 in x 7.75 in x 3.25 in giving 244 in2 of surface area exposed to airflow vs. 150 in2, 793 in3 of core volume vs. 300 in3, and 18lbs of thermal mass vs. 8.5 lbs, your intake charge will be consistently cooler under all conditions. Accordingly, your performance will be consistently better than the stock or any aftermarket TMIC.
Surprisingly, this is a very easy install. No major cutting is required and it is easily reversible. More power. More consistent power. Relatively easy install and relatively easy to uninstall.
At this point your MS3 will be making somewhere in the neighborhood of 315-320 whp and 345 ft-lbs of torque. You will have more power throughout the entire rev range. You are regularly embarrassing unsuspecting WRX, STi, and EVO owners. Plus your MS3 now looks like the badass that it is with TurboXS MS3-FMIC core filling the gaping hole in the front bumper.

TurboXS releases the Mazdaspeed3 downpipe (MS3-DP). This downpipe is the pure key to turning your MS3 into a real beast. A stock MS3 made 274 ft-lbs and 244.1 whp. on a Dynapack Dyno. Adding our MS3-DP and the MS3-RP, we saw an average peak torque gain of 50 ft-lbs and a peak wheel horsepower gain of 40 whp. The downpipe's bellmouth is made from investment cast stainless steel and was engineered with clearance notches to ease installation. The bellmouth was used to give your wastegate the proper flow characteristics to avoid a boost creep and promote high exhaust gas velocity. 3 inch diameter mandrel bent stainless steel is used throughout to Downpipe to compliment the bellmouth housing and a cast stainless steel flange completes the downpipe. It has been tuned to offer the best blend of vent to atmosphere and re-circulation without check engines lights, stumbling or the dreaded back fire issues that are commonly associated with Blow OFF Valves and turbocharged cars that use Mass Air Flow configurations. Each kit will bolt directly to your Mazdaspeed without any additional adapters.
